In the Tertiary Period, the laurisilva forest covered almost all of Europe.  Now Garajonay, on La Gomera, is the best example of this relic of Nature, which was well known in the Old World.
Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the forest is always shrouded in a halo of mystery. At the beginning of spring, the mist which preserves it gives us a glimpse of a feast of colour amongst the tree trunks covered in lichens – a carpet of deep pink made up of one of the Macronesian flora commonly known as a crowfoot geranium.
